What You Need To Know About ADU Development

Building a DADU? Here's What You Need to Know - Sunset Magazine

Looking to build your first additional dwelling unit? We can help! Check out this quick guide on what you need to know about ADU development.

Start With ADU Research

The first step to any construction project should always be researching. ADUs have different regulations in every city. You are going to need to know what your city’s rules are about ADUs before you start building them. A good way to do this is to construct a feasibility study beforehand.

You should also be aware of the different types of ADUs there are and the costs associated with them. You may want a detached ADU, but find that an attached ADU fits your budget better. Hence why research is so important.

Create A Budget

One of the biggest ADU mistakes you can make is not having a proper budget. Knowing your costs beforehand allows you to more accurately predict your total expenses and find a financing solution that will meet those needs. The last thing you want to do is get halfway through your build and realize you can’t afford it.

The four major costs of ADUs are design and planning, city fees, construction, and finish materials. You also need to account for appliances, furniture, and difficulties that could pop up.

Work With ADU Professionals

Don’t try to do it all by yourself. You should work with ADU professionals who can create the necessary architectural designs and plans needed to construct an ADU. Professionals will be able to help you get your permits on the first try and move your development along more quickly.

Don’t work with people who have no ADU experience though. Contractors may claim they can help you out, but if they have never built an ADU, chances are they will be less help than you need. Always try to work with someone local in your area who knows the ADU rules and regulations.

If there are already lots of ADUs in your area, ask your neighbors who they worked with to see who you should hire to help complete your ADU development. If you are in the LA area, we recommend Levi Design Build.
